Metal Building Named for Dean of College
A metal building will be renamed in honor of a man who devoted 10 years of his career to upgrading technical education at a Kansas school.
Garden City Community College announced that it will name one of its most prominent training facilities in honor of Dr. Gary E. Jarmer.
The Technical Annex will be named for the man who retired nine years ago as dean of technical education, a vote by GCCC's Board of Trustees assured.
The metal building, which opened in the spring semester of 1996, houses the GCCC Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration Program, which Jarmer championed.
College officials planned to contact the honoree about the richly deserved tribute by phone after the meeting to tell him the news.
While at GCCC, the dean played defining, leading roles in establishing the Industrial Production Technology Program as well as the college's Agriculture Technology Program.
Jarmer served as GCCC dean of technical education from July, 1988 to July, 1998. During his tenure the college not only initiated the program, but also erected the commercial steel building to house it.
He worked in expanding and enhancing many programs in the Technical Division, while serving as administrator over criminal justice, building trades, drafting, automotive technology, cosmetology and others.
The man for whom the metal building will be named previously served on the board of trustees, from 1983 to 1987, but resigned in 1987.
His reason for leaving the board after winning a second term, one that would have run through 1991? So he could become a college employee.
